Areyto Apiary

Stewardship as Ceremony

Areyto Apiary is Apis Atabey's pollinator sanctuary. It is home to introduced honey bees and native pollinators big and small.

Areyto is the Arawak word for ceremony, spiritual community gathering, or ritual. During Taino ceremonies past and future, our living ancestors sing, dance, commune with earth medicines, fast, celebrate, mourn, and offer sacred smoke for Spirit to lift our prayers.

At Apis Atabey, we honor the bees as holy beeings. Tending them is like tending an altar at an Areyto. Altars and honey bees are living, dying, and holding the space between. When we approach the nest, we ask consent to pray, sing, listen, dance, and merge with their Spirit.
